چکیده

This study investigated a rainfall event under typhoon influence using 2D video disdrometer and weather radar observations to characterize raindrop size distribution (DSD) in mixed convective stratiform precipitating system. During the time period when both rainfalls existed, DSDs generally indicated monotonically decreasing shape with increasing particle size, relatively gradual decrease at intermediate observed certain times; this feature is attributed combined effect of rainfalls. transitional between rainfalls, exhibited bimodal shape. The were well approximated by newly proposed gamma exponential (GRACE) function, which was defined as sum distribution. A comparison volume ratio components GRACE revealed that component DSD larger than DSD. These results suggest became during predominated because weakening rainfall. useful for understanding cloud-microphysical processes precipitation conditions.

Comparison of Raindrop Size Distribution Measurements by Collocated Disdrometers

An impact-type Joss–Waldvogel disdrometer (JWD), a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD), and a laser optical OTT Particle Size and Velocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer (PD) were used to measure the raindrop size distribution (DSD) over a 6-month period in Huntsville, Alabama. Comparisons indicate event rain totals for all three disdrometers that were in reasonable agreement with a reference rain...

Drop Size Distributions and Radar Observations of Convective and Stratiform Rain over the Equatorial Indian and West Pacific Oceans

Two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) data were analyzed from two equatorial Indian (Gan) and west Pacific Ocean (Manus) islands where precipitation is primarily organized by the intertropical convergence zone and theMadden–Julian oscillation (MJO). The 18 (3.5) months of 2DVDdata fromManus (Gan) Island show that 1) the two sites have similar drop size distribution (DSD) spectra of liquid wa...

Classification of convective/stratiform echoes in radar reflectivity observations using a fuzzy logic algorithm

[1] In radar reflectivity observations, the convective and stratiform rain types always have poorly defined boundaries, which caused problem for rain classification. A fuzzy logic (FL) algorithm is developed to classify convective and stratiform rainfall based on the radar reflectivity observations in the next three steps: First, the algorithm is calibrated on Hefei Doppler radar site in China....

Comparison of Two Raindrop Size Distribution Retrieval Algorithms for X-Band Dual Polarization Observations

In this study the authors evaluate two algorithms, the so-called beta ( ) and constrained methods, proposed for retrieving the governing parameters of the “normalized” gamma drop size distribution (DSD) from dual-polarization radar measurements. The method treats the drop axis ratio as a variable and computes drop shape and DSD parameters from radar reflectivity (ZH), differential reflectivity ...
